Cannabidiol, more commonly known as CBD, is a non-intoxicating component of both the hemp and cannabis plants. It has become increasingly popular over recent years due to the benefits it provides, some reporting that it relieves various health conditions like anxiety, rheumatoid arthritis, and epilepsy. It has also caused some questions regarding drug tests and testing.
Many have turned to over-the-counter CBD supplements to ease chronic pains and illnesses, especially for older patients who have difficulty swallowing pills and medication.
One of the common questions asked when intaking CBD is how it impacts a person who is set to take a drug test. Though it is non-intoxicating, it is still considered a foreign element that might appear in certain screenings.
Despite quality sources and processing, there is still a minute risk of failing a drug test when using CBD products, and this mainly depends on a person’s chemical composition. It is quite difficult to determine how susceptible a person is to this until the drug test result comes out.
CBD, even if recommended by a medical professional, can still appear in your system when you are screened for drug use. However, this is quite rare.
Why Might CBD Cause a Failed Drug Test?
It is important to note and differentiate that the CBD compound itself will not lead to you failing your drug test. However, it is not an absolute impossibility since many CBD products still have a faint trace of THC.
Legally, industrial hemp and hemp products can only contain less than 0.3 percent THC. This amount is considered safe and not at all psychoactive. But this much THC can still be occasionally detected during drug screenings.
CBD users don’t normally turn out positive during drug tests for THC. On the other hand, a false positive might be the result of patients who consume more than 1,000 milligrams of CBD per day. Average consumption is far below that.
Diagnostic centers and laboratories have reported that one in ten people tested who use CBD products could result in a positive test.
Most of these could also be attributed to people’s different metabolic rates. Much like how we digest and metabolize food differently, the same goes for natural supplements like CBD.
Types of CBD Extracts
There are three levels in determining the CBD and terpene contents in products: full spectrum, broad spectrum, and isolate. And based on the terms, they’re pretty easy to guess.
Full-spectrum are products which contain the full spectrum of CBD and terpenes which are found in the plant where the oil was extracted from. These products are most likely to contain THC. As we feel these are the most potent option, this is the type of CBD extract in most of our products.
Broad-spectrum also contains the full spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes but usually without the THC, since this was removed through chromatography.
And finally, Isolates are products that underwent a special process to isolate the CBD molecule in crystalline form, so they do not contain any THC. Our Magic Maples utilize this form of CBD.
It is usually the full-spectrum products that can cause someone to fail a drug test. However, this is not always the case, as full-spectrum products may also not cause drug screening failure. It’s quite rare, in fact.
In general, most people won’t fail a drug test from taking CBD oil alone. However, like with anything in life, there are exceptions. A false positive result can be triggered by different testing methods used for screening or the biological makeup of a person. Excessive use of CBD oil can also result in a failed drug test.
Nowadays, CBD oil is being widely considered as completely safe. In fact, even the World Health Organization has stated that given its chemical makeup and overwhelming benefits, CBD should not be identified as a dangerous drug.
